I first became Dr. Joe's patient in my 30's, over 40 years ago. He was covering for a doctor in Fair Lawn and he answered my call. Instead of going to the hospital he told me to go to his office because he was getting off his shift. " This way you won't have to pay hospital fees."
His office was in a house on Lafayette. I immediately experienced his kindness and caring for me. It was then, and without hesitation, that I decided he would be my doctor.
It is with great sadness that I learned of his passing. He was/is the best doctor I have ever had and speak of him often when talking about health care these days.
His family was lucky to have such a gem as a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His patients and friends were lucky to have him as a friend and doctor. Always with a smile on his face with caring and kindness. He will be greatly missed but remembered forever.

I've been a patient of Joe Lozito for over 20 years. I say "patient" but I could just as well have said "friend." When I asked my former physician who was retiring from medicine, Dr. Dave Perkel, he told me that if he had to place his health in any single individual, it would be "Dr. Joe." He was right. Both Dave and Joe had similar philosophies to treat the patient, not the disease. When I saw Joe each year for my physical, he dispensed invaluable advice,. And with a sense of humor besides! He eased my concerns and calmed my soul, as well as heal my body. His obituary did not mention that he and his brother worked in inner city Paterson. It was where he observed first hand that disease and addiction affect all people - young, old, black, white, men and women, rich and poor. He was the actual Patch Adams. He will be sorely missed by all, and his family may be comforted in the secure knowledge that his final journey was immediately to heaven.

Dr Joe,
I was your first medical assistant and Geri was your secretary. It seems like a few years ago but it was 1979! Donna joined us a little while later and as your practice grew we moved up the street and many more were hired. You were a tough boss in the beginning but I learned a lot. The hours were long. Flu season and covering for doctors were a nightmare. But you became family. You came to see my son when he was born because I asked you to check him out. You took care of my kids until I moved to Florida. You worked your whole life like you wanted to do.
Until I see you again… Eileen

I always knew Joe as the family physician to my grandfather and parents. I then recall a few years ago at our annual conference, he came up to me and introduced himself. From that moment forward, I would look forward to seeing him year after year in Atlantic City. When I started my own practice, he was one of the first people I know to offer support. He was always happy and willing to offer assistance. When my sister passed away, he comforted by parents in a way only he knew how. I credit him for still having my parents and grandfather here, and in fairly good health. He will be missed as not only a physician, a colleague, but as part of our family.

Our thoughts and prayers to the Lozito family during this very difficult time.
Dr. Joe was one of the first physicians I met when establishing my practice in NJ. He immediately stood out over and above all others. He was caring, understanding, very competent and always available for his patients. As a result he became our family physician first and over the years a very dear friend.
He was well thought of by fellow physicians, nurses and most importantly by his patients. He was truly an old school family physician. The best of the best.
Joseph was totally devoted to Geri, his children and grandchildren raising a beautiful family. Clearly he has passed on all his excellent medical traits and ways to his daughter Debra who will carry on his legacy.
I am so saddened by his passing but thankful that I had the privilege and honor of knowing Dr. Joe as a peer and a friend.
He will be missed by all.

I first met Joe at Union Hospital where he did his medical residency. He was in attendance of a lecture I gave to all first year residents on respiratory therapy as I was the registered therapist director of respiratory therapy. Out of the entire class of residents Joe was the only one who stayed after the lecture was over to discuss the topics. He made clear several points on which he disagreed or wanted explained once again. By the end of his residency we became fast friends and he became the Dr. I respected the most out of all those that came with or after him. His competency and caring concerns for his patients were overwhelming self evident. Once he completed his residency he moved on to his practice and Valley Hospital and over the next 20 or so years we had a few brief contacts. However, around this point in time my older brother Michael called me about a medical problem. As he lived near Joe I told him to go see Joe and only Joe. They became fast friends over the ensuing decades with Mike often asking for the last appointment so he and Joe couId talk as friends, and Joe always taking the time out of his busy life just to talk with Mike. It was thru this doctor patient relationship that I was able to reconnect with Joe with my brother being the intermediary even though I had moved to NC. At this point in time my son Brendan was ready to enter medical school and you guessed it I connected with Joe for guidance on Brendan's med school choices. He not only made time to discuss with me but wrote Brendan a letter of recommendation to PCOM which led to Brendan's acceptance there. Joe always giving and helping. God bless you Joe.

On one particular Sunday night we hit a blizzard. Joe decided to take route 1 back to Philly. About 3 miles outside of Philly he decides to stop at a diner for hot chocolate. There certainly was only one Dr. Joe. He was a compassionate and caring doctor who dedicated his life to helping his patients. He cared for my husband and I for forty years through all kinds of routine and serious illnesses. His medical colleagues respected and admired him. Whenever I was asked who my primary physician was, the response was always the same. “Oh, Dr. Joe,, you’re in good hands.” His kindness and humor will be missed by all.
Deepest condolences to the Lozito family.
RIP, dear friend.

Dr. Joe has been our primary care physician for many years. He has always warm and friendly, interested in discussion family and how everybody is doing. At the same time Dr. Joe was always able to diagnose any problem and come up with a solution, often referring us to one of his always able colleagues. Through Joe we have come to know and love our cardiologist, Dr. Warren Maresca. Over the years, Dr. Joe became a cherished friend. We were shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. Rest in peace, dear friend. Bev & Dick Engelhardt, Fair Lawn, NJ.

My sincerest sympathy to the Lozito family. My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting him about a year ago when we came to him as his new patients. He was so kind and understanding with my 91 year old husband. He took good care of him before he passed in February, when I would go for my check ups, he would always have a kind word for me. A word of understanding when I would tell him how I missed my husband. Thank you, Dr Joe for all your kindness Anita Brudzynski.

It was with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Joseph Lozito. He was a very warm and generous person who always gave of himself to his family, friends and his medical patients. When my son Russell married his granddaughter Jen, I still remember him coming over to tell me that Russell fit right into his family and how they loved him. On his 80th birthday Joe took about 35 family members on a cruise so they could help him enjoy that milestone in his life. He loved the Christmas parties that he gave for his entire family where there was always delicious food and beautiful decorations for the Christmas holiday. Joe would be right there in the kitchen slicing up and dishing out the prime rib for everyone to enjoy. My heartfelt sympathy and condolences go out to his wife Geraldine, and his entire family for their loss. His life was a gift to everyone who knew him.

uncle Joe, we will miss you so very much. I think back over the years and memories and conversations we have had, and the one I cherish was when I was younger in Sea Isle when I caught a weak fish off the jetty in front of the Spinnaker you taught me how to filet the fish. Always teaching all of us everything, you will be missed and thought of as your spirit lives on in all of us. love you Glen

Dr. Joe was more than just the best Dr. but a true friend. We could have a conversation about anything and I was able to tell him about anything that I needed to talk about. I will miss our conversations about food, wine and places to eat. Joe was always there for me whenever I needed him. My Dr. for over 40 years. I will miss him greatly.

To The Lozito Family,
We are so saddened today to hear the news about Doctor Joe.
He was the kindest, sweetest and caring person and friend. We trusted him with all of his medical decisions. He was our doctor since the 80’s.
I know he loved The Bahamas and I passed the word to his favorite restaurant waiters and they are saddened from the news and give their condolences to the family.
May you Rest In Peace Doctor Joe
We love you Diane and Bob Clouter

Dr Joe has been a family doctor since the early 1980s - He gave my dad 10 extra years and was still my 102 year old mom’s doctor - He advised my husband when he was diagnosed with leukemia- I just saw his 3 weeks ago for my regular 3 month check - There was no doctor like him and probably never will be again - Missing your smiling face already - Rest in Peace, Dr Joe!

Dr Joe and I go back to when I was 9 years old and we all played sports in school 25 field in Paterson. We would get hurt and run to the drug store and Mr Lozito as we called him would patch us up. He knew my parents and we used his Pharmacy! As the years passed I got married and moved to Hawthorne where he was Dr Joe and was our family doctor taking care of my wife Maureen , our 3 children and our grand children. At my office visits with him we would always talk family and he would ask how everyone was doing and then we would talk about the old Paterson neighborhood! We will miss him, Rest In Peace Dr Joe

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Joseph?
A: Dr. Joe Lozito was my hero! He wasn’t just a physician to me, he was my friend and a second father to me. It was an honor knowing and loving him for over 40 years.
His family vicariously was my family. I always felt that his sons and daughters were my brothers and sisters and loved them all.
I cannot imagine life without Dr Joe. There is a hole in my heart that surpasses the loss of my own parents.
He’s has been there for me for most of my adult life.
My love and heartfelt sympathy goes out to the entire Lozito family.
As Dr Joe knew, having a champion race horse is a once in a lifetime opportunity. In similar fashion knowing and loving Dr Joe was a once in a lifetime opportunity. There could never be anyone like him.
With Love and Sincerity,
Charlie

Like everyone loved Joe, needless to say! We were classmates in med school at PCOM. I was “broke” and in need of bedroom furniture for my kids. Joe knew it and essentially gave / “sold” me a set he didn’t need for a song. Which my wife, Joann and I greatly appreciated. That set still adorns a spare bedroom in our house and every time I see it I think of Joe. I am sure my simple story of Joe’s kindness and generosity can be repeated by countless colleagues and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace

I first met Dr. Joe when he and his brother were pharmacists in Paterson and I was working for Melcon’s Pharmacy in Hawthorne. Many years later when I retired from the Navy and needed a doctor, Dr. Joe was my choice. He was a caring, compassionate physician and was always there for me. He helped me through one of the darkest periods of my life. I’ll miss his gentle good humor and his always taking the time to listen to my problems. My condolences to his family.
