I remember meeting the Marshall family as a young adult, when Diane was dating my brother David. Oh my, but Mr. Marshall could talk! And the vivid and detailed stories he told were full of multiple and interesting side stories as well ( just as his book became, years later). The strongest and most lasting memory of all, in 50 or so years of memories, is the powerful yet gentle love he had for Daisy. What a memory it is. He lived a full and interesting life on his own terms. What an example he set.

I met John several years ago when I was a Pequannock Police Officer. We quickly became friends. I would often stop to talk with John at the house. He was always welcoming. We had many great conversations about WWII and life in general. John was happy to be interviewed by my daughter for a school project on WWII. John was indeed one of a kind, he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

I had the ability to interview Mr. Marshall when I was 13 years old. I was assigned a project on WWII and my father helped to coordinate times and days that I could go and speak to Mr. Marshall and ask about his experience. He gave me a new outlook on the experiences of soldiers during the war, and I am more than fortunate to have been able to learn so much from him. He will be dearly missed.

John became a patient over thirty years ago. His generosity and gratitude were infectious. Shortly thereafter, he became a friend. Over the years, our handshakes became hugs. He became a favorite of my office staff; his boyish smile, crewcut and warmth expressed a vitality so at odds with his age.
Early on I mentioned my family would be shopping for a Christmas tree during the upcoming weekend, and John said,
“I thought you were Jewish.”
“I am but my wife and kids aren’t.”
“ So come to my house this weekend and I’ll help your kids chop a tree down on my property.”
Not only were my kids, Angela and Alex, fascinated by actually cutting down their own tree with John’s strong hands guiding them, but the entire experience was a rural NJ version of Disney World in Lincoln Park: the fish in the pond, the long sloping lawn to run down, rides on the tractor, watching raccoons eat the food John left outside, target practice with a BB rifle, the crackle and smell of a cedar-wood fire, Daisy’s small cut sandwiches on the colorful basement benches.
This lead to other rituals and visits over the years. John dropping off firewood to our home, my calling him on Memorial and Veterans Days, his making whiskey sours for my wife, my saving New Yorker magazines for him and listening to his stories and enjoying the pride in his family. And I will never forget when Daisy became ill, his absolute devotion, care and love. We will miss you.

John was a pillar in the community. I always enjoyed stopping by his house when working in Lincoln Park as a police officer. John shared great accounts of his time in the Army and is truly a part of our American History. Watch the documentary that he was part of.
