Oh my sweet Gail. What an amazing human! What an absolute fireball of a person. Her humor, her wit, her fashion sense (plaid) made the world a better place. I have told stories of Gail's visits to Vanderbilt to many thousands of people in the hopes to bring the true humanity of PWS to life.
One story was when I met Gail, I commented on her amazing bright red locks with matching red lipstick. She winked and conspiratorially said, "You know, it's not real". I said, in feigned shock, "your hair?!" "No the hair is real, but not the color!" It doubled me over with laughter. She could tell a joke like no one else.
These stories always made people laugh and I loved showing pictures of the Jersey Girls in their element! What a life well lived.
Even though Gail struggled with PWS and the debilitating hunger, it did not lessen her spirit, drive or fire. Gail made the world a little kinder, better and less cold when she was here. Our job to have known her, is to carry that torch the color of her bright red hair, to make the world a better place. Carry her torch and may her flame burn ever brightly.
It makes me feel so lucky to have known her. Her participation in our studies over the years have highlighted aging in PWS and helped developed drugs that will help others with PWS. Her life had great meaning for those who knew her and for those with PWS who will benefit from her efforts and sacrifice. I hope that she is happy, full and has a house full of puppies nipping at her heels and a handsome boyfriend who is feeding her all the food she loves. Gail, you are one in a million. Gail, rest in the peace you so richly deserve.

Elizabeth Roof, the head researcher from Vanderbilt had said it best after Gail's best friend and housemate Laurel passed away in 2014, and I believe it holds true to Gail as well that her contribution to research will make others with PWS struggle less and live better. Since then, new drug trials have been conducted for PWS to curb Hyperphagia and promote weight loss, and without the help of Gail and her dear friends, those trials would not have happened. Gail will never be hungry again, and will finally know what it feels like to be full.

Oh my sweet and spicy Gail Geene, or as Dom and Linc call you, their "Grandma Gail." You know how much I absolutely love you. You have taught me so much, and I have learned so much from you. Of course you tested me in so many ways, and even with that, we would always smile and laugh. You always had the best stories to share, and knew all the best gossip. You were always my travel partner and roommate each time we traveled to Vanderbilt, and I can still hear your voice saying goodnight as we both went to sleep. Your smile looking out to the ocean in Point Pleasant, and joyful laugh petting the stingrays are forever etched in my mind. I will never forget that first huge squeeze and happy tears we both shared when we finally got to see each other at Kessler before you returned home. You have made a difference in the lives of many, especially those with PWS. Your life and your story has helped our researchers from Vanderbilt learn more about PWS. You have provided hope to so many families of young ones with PWS see that their child can live a long, healthy, fulfilling, and happy life. You defied the odds, Gail Geene, and I will never, EVER forget you. I know you are up in those high clouds drinking endless cups of hot coffee with Laurel, and dancing away with your mom and dad who you loved so much. We love you Gail Geene.

Oh the times you have had in that van! From the daily trips to work, to the longer ones to Pittsburg and Special Olympics and other outings, I can only imagine the stories you heard, the conflicts you managed, and the memories made. Thank you Shana for everything. I have watched you grow in your career, and your perfect combination of professionalism, enthusiasm, and compassion makes the behavior programs you design successful. Thank you for being Gail's steady roommate and friend. xoxo
