Obituary of Mary Pflieger

Mary Elizabeth (Lala) Pflieger (86), of Denville, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 22, 2024. 

Born in Astoria, NY, Mary was a driving force in creating and living a full and exciting life. 

Mary’s ’s steadfast work ethic and entrepreneurship began in her childhood years working in her father’s family retail business on Steinway St. in Astoria. Mary’s distinguished education began in high school as a full-scholarship recipient to the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan, followed by a full-scholarship degree from Parsons School of Design. 

Mary channeled her artistic and business talents into an illustrious career in New York City as a graphic designer for internationally renowned cosmetic and perfume design companies including Revlon, Inc., where she invented a cosmetic applicator patented by the U.S. government. She also worked as a regional representative for Montblanc Pens. While raising her family, Mary became a licensed realtor in NJ and, later in life, also in Florida. 

Mary enjoyed many hobbies, including a passion for nature and gardening, domestic and international travel, PBS programming, reading and research, and time spent at the shore. Mary shared her wisdom and experience with multiple generations of family and friends, who benefitted greatly from her influence and presence in their lives. Predeceased by her husband, Donald, Mary is survived by her four daughters, Nadine Cullen, Bernadine Ferrari (Jon), Lesley Krautheim (Ken), Martine Pflieger (Michael McLaughlin); five grandchildren: Kimberly, Jon, Isabella, Abigail, Elizabeth; and great-granddaughter Rylee Mae. 

A memorial mass to honor Mary will be celebrated on August 3, 2024, 10:00 AM at St. Peter the Apostle Church, River Edge, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Toms River, NJ Salvation Army or Bergen County Zoo (located in Van Saun Park), Paramus, NJ.
