I write full of warm and happy memories of time spent with Lillian; her husband Mike and daughter Lori; and her son, David, a childhood friend of mine. Sleepovers and cookouts every summer, rolling down the lawn, driving through the woods to swim at the lake, toasting marshmallows and watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. The first time I ever caught (and released) a firefly and the first time I ever held a sparkler was in their backyard. These magical moments illuminate me as pure and bright after nearly half a century of klieg-lit nights and dark, daunting days.
My parents were into health food, but going to see David and Lori meant a good chance of Lillian giving us Fritos as we played down in the rec room or spooning Cool Whip over a dessert in the kitchen. It was always heartwarming to see the friendship she and my mother had shared since they were little girls, and maintained as best they could even as they moved further away through retirement. I looked up to David, half a year older than me, and admire the humane scientific pursuit and academic service to which he’s devoted his life.
Thank you to my “Aunt” Lillian and her family, for those classic Americana summers of fun and treats, and most of all friendship—a cherished part of my childhood that lives on in me to this day. We sincerely regret we’re unable to express our love and condolences in person to David and Lori and their families.

Jordan and I express our sorrow to Lori and David and their families.
My friendship with Lillian began in 1946, when we attended Trinity Lutheran School, our church's Grades 5-8 religious school in Garfield NJ. When Lillian was in the eighth grade, she represented our school at the Herald News Spelling Bee, and I cheered her on in the audience. We also enjoyed eight years as Girl Scouts under Mrs. Margaret Kmetz's generous leadership in our church's troop.
Our friendship continued at Garfield High School, where together with Ellen Georgius and Patty Heck, we became the PLEBS (the first letters of our first names). Lillian's friendship during my high school years was invaluable to me. Although we went to different colleges, we continued our friendship during weekends and summers and both became teachers.
After Lillian married Mike and I married George, we often got together. With our children, we especially enjoyed watching the fireworks in Montville on the Fourth of July after a cookout in their backyard.
In our later years, we continued our friendship, and in 2004, we met with Ellen Harker-Visnakovs to plan to attend the Garfield High School 50th reunion. That led to several wonderful weekends with Ellen at her lovely home in Vineland and forays to Cape May.
We'll cherish all those memories with Lillian, and we bless her as she journeys on in her life in spirit with those who have gone on before her.

My condolances to the family. Lillian was a Garfield High School friend of mine! She stayed in touch through college and marriage by sending Christmas cards! We went to High School reunions with Betsy Torjussen and in later years we had girls' weekends in South Jersey. She will be missed! Ellen Harker-Visnakovs
