Obituary of James L. Hile

JAMES L. HILE passed on Nov.13th. Born in Detroit , Mich. July 10,1918, he was the son of the late Olivia D. and Charles Hile. Mr. Hile was raised in Louisville, KY where he attended Arts High School. He later attended the NY School of Fine & Industrial Arts and the New School. He later became a pioneer in the field of commercial art now known as graphic art. He served as a Tech/Sgt in the US Army during WW-2 and was stationed at Washington & Lee Univ. and the Pentagon. In 1947 he married Carolyn Dowling and was married 52 yrs. before her passing Oct.22,1998. Mr. Hile continued to serve his country as a Lt. Col. in the Civil Air Patrol where he participated in over 50 missions. He rec'd. the awards of Arts & Letters , Unit Citations and the Commendation Medal for his service for WW-2. He also served in the Civil Defence Program during the Cuban Missle Crisis. In 1999 he rec'd. the title of Official Kentucky Colonel from the Gov. of Kentucky. As a commercial artist , he did illustrations for the 1945 World Book Encyclopedia , plus live on air artwork for the 1st TV coverage of the Republican and Democrat Conventions. In addition, he served as ad designer for Life Magazine , McGraw- Hill Publishers and Johnson & Johnson. He continued painting , carving and gardening until his passing. A resident of Montville Twp. for over 65 yrs, he served his community on the Board of Education for 12 yrs. He is preceeded in death by his beloved wife Carolyn and his son James D. Hile. He is survived by his daughters the Rev. Jeanette Hile of Roxbury , Lynn Harty and her husband David of Shenandoah Junction , WV, his daughter-in-law Carol G. Hile of Fairlawn , NJ, his beloved grandchildren James D. Jr. of Fairlawn , Julianne Vitale and her husband Chris of Elmwood Pk., Alan and wife Brandy Harty of Ozark , AL, Thomas M. Harty of Wichita Falls , TX and Sarah Harty, Rsq. of San Diego, CA and great grandson Connor David Harty. In addition he leaves his nephews Charles and Robert Storrs and his sister-in-law Jeannette O'Donnell and her family. According to his wishes there will be private cremation with a Memorial Service to be scheduled for a later date.
