George Gilliland, 72, of Lincoln Park, New Jersey, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on June 13, 2026.

Born on November 17, 1953, to his parents Myrtle (née Cottrell) and Ernest Gilliland. He was raised in Lincoln Park, where he spent his entire life in the community he loved.

George met Debbie in May 1977, and they were married on April 28, 1979. Their 47 years of marriage were marked by love, laughter, and devotion. Together they built a home where family and friends always felt welcome and found their greatest joy in watching their family grow with the addition of their daughter, Jennifer, son-in-law Justin, and two beautiful grandchildren, Eleanor and Elijah, whom they loved beyond measure.

George dedicated his life to serving others, both professionally and as a volunteer. He spent his career with the Morris County Department of Public Works, where he was known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help wherever he was needed.

Beyond his career, George proudly served the Lincoln Park Volunteer Fire Department for more than 50 years, including nine years as Chief. His commitment to the fire service extended throughout Morris County as a founding member of NEMMAA (Northeastern Morris Mutual Aid Association), where he served as MAC-21 for Morris County Region 2. Whether responding to emergencies close to home or supporting neighboring communities through mutual aid, George was always ready to answer the call. His dedication, leadership, and selflessness earned the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

While George’s service to his community was extraordinary, his greatest pride was always his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who never missed an opportunity to be there for the people he loved. Whether it was a school event, sporting event, recital, or simply spending time together, George showed up. 

George had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. He never forgot a face or name, and he had a way of making everyone feel like an old friend. A phenomenal storyteller with an infectious sense of humor, he loved bringing family and friends together and creating memories that will be treasured for generations. Whether around town or down the shore, George never met a stranger.

Some of George’s happiest days were spent at the family’s beach house in Ocean Beach, where he loved gathering with family and friends. He found his greatest peace on the water, spending countless hours boating. 

George leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, service, and unwavering love for his family. He will be remembered not only for the decades of dedicated service as a firefighter, but also for his warm smile, welcoming spirit, incredible stories, and the genuine interest he took in everyone he met. He lived a life defined by showing up for his family, his friends, his community, and anyone in need. His example will continue to inspire everyone whose life he touched.

He was predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Myrtle Gilliland.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie Gilliliand; his daughter, Jennifer Herbert; his son-in-law, Justin; his cherished grandchildren, Eleanor and Elijah; his sister, Patricia Kamenetz; his brother-in-law Gary; and his nephews, Brian and Mark.

He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and eternally loved.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in George’s memory.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 19, 2026 at Keri-Lozito Funeral Home, 125 Main Street, Lincoln Park, NJ from 3-8 PM.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Keri-Lozito Funeral Home.  Cremation is private.
